"Elegant Ellie is 15-year-old Saddlebred mare. In 1994, she fell in the Los Angeles River during a series of earthquake after-shocks. She was diagnosed with bilateral high-suspensory ligament tears and provided with two surgical procedures at Alamo Pintado Equine Medical Center. Her lameness problem increased over time and she has not been ridden for over six years. For the past three years, she has deteriorated such that she looked like a bag of bones with hip sores.
In October of 2003, I took her back to Alamo Pintado for a re-evaluation as she refused to eat unless provided with up to 4 grams of Phenylbutzone daily. They tried a different series of pain medications. Ellie did NOT improve.
By January 2004, I was advised to end her suffering. Ellie refused to walk. Aleta McCormick came out to see Ellie for the first time in January. Ellie looked terrible, bony with sores on her hips. Aleta determined to treat Ellie only one time per month.
In February 2004, Ellie was walking a little more, still taking 2gm of Phenylbutzone. The weather was somewhat warmer. Aleta determined that she felt improvement. I did not see any physical change. However, I followed Aleta's instructions of trying to motivate Ellie to walk several times a week. Approximately two weeks after Aleta's second visit, I thought I saw the beginning of chest muscles. By the time of Aleta's third visit, Ellie did have chest muscles.
Ellie has steadily improved since beginning treatment with Aleta. Her hip sores have healed. Her weight is back to normal. She is NOT taking any medication. I have actually been on her for 5 minute rides. Aleta believes that she will be able to go out for regular rides in the next six months. I believe Aleta having seen the dramatic changes."
